Embedding the essential components of positive psychology principles, into your Yoga practice, will greatly enhance the beneficial aspects of both disciplines. One of the primary components of positive psychology is self-knowledge. Knowing one’s self sounds easy on the surface, but how many people invest their time in looking within? Self-knowledge is a major component in Jnana Yoga.

Self-Knowledge is one of the beginning points for identifying the core life values of an individual. As you engage in this process, you may want to ask yourself, what do I truly hold dear to my heart and why? What is my natural code of ethics? Given the opportunity, what would I like to contribute to my family, friends, and community?

These are some of the questions you may ask yourself, as you begin a process of self-inquiry, in order to gain self-knowledge about your own unique talents and skills. You may also want to consider what really makes your heart sing. What makes you truly happy and fulfilled? You may love to write, draw, dance, or teach Yoga. You may also love to spend time in nature, or you may be the happiest, when you are volunteering to help those who are less fortunate.

One of the keys to uplifting your heart and mind, through the practice of positive psychology, is to focus on your strengths and not on your weaknesses. In other words, instead of mentally dwelling on the fact that you may love to draw beautiful pictures, but you really do not want to volunteer at the local food bank, focus on the gift of your artistic ability, and how you can offer to donate some drawings to a local school or community center.

In the context of the physical practice of Yoga asanas, continue to build on your current level of strength and flexibility, in a compassionate and patient manner. While practicing Yoga, also witness your thoughts. When you find that you are engaging in negative and anxious thinking, stop and refocus your attention on the rich blessings that surround you. Remember to honor your successes, and your successes will continue to grow and blossom.

Conclusion

A Yogic lifestyle and positive psychology is a powerful combination, which enables a practitioner to channel energy in a positive way. Many people prevent their own happiness by investing too much time in states of self-criticism for past mistakes.

Two of the most popular styles of Yoga classes are Ashtanga and Vinyasa. The defining characteristic of Vinyasa is the alignment of movement and breath; and, technically, Ashtanga is a form of Vinyasa. Both styles stem from the Krishnamacharya Yoga lineage, and both highlight breath-centered movement. However, that is where the similarities end.

The biggest difference between Ashtanga and Vinyasa lies in the sequencing. Ashtanga Yoga consists of three series of postures: primary, secondary, and advanced. The series are sequential in that a practitioner must master one before he or she can move on to the next. Each series consists of a predefined order of postures (asanas) that students practice the same way, every time. On the other side of the coin, Vinyasa class sequences vary, and the practitioner might experience an entirely different sequence each time he/she practices.

Each Ashtanga series revolves around a category of asanas: the primary series centers on forward bends, the secondary series focuses on back bends, and the advanced series emphasizes arm-support and arm-balancing poses. As the class progresses, the postures in the series, become more complex. Vinyasa Yoga sequences, on the other hand, often feature a peak pose. The peak pose is a challenging and complex pose that the teacher has selected for a particular practice. The teacher leads the class through a sequence of postures that helps students prepare for practice and recover from the peak pose.

Both Ashtanga and Vinyasa employ a three-pose transition, called a “Vinyasa,” which includes Chatturanga, Upward-Facing Dog, and Downward-Facing Dog. In the Ashtanga practice, the student performs an asymmetrical pose on the right side, moves through a Vinyasa, and then repeats the pose on the left side. In Vinyasa Yoga, a student may link several asymmetrical poses together before performing the Vinyasa and switching to the other leg.

Ashtanga classes can be either teacher-led or “Mysore,” which means self-led. In a Mysore class, each student practices an Ashtanga series from memory, moving at his or her own pace. The teacher walks around and provides individual adjustments and instruction, as needed. In contrast, a Yoga teacher almost always leads a Vinyasa class. The Vinyasa teacher will cue the entire class together and offer some individual adjustments on an as-needed basis.

Finally, students of Ashtanga Yoga do not use props, posture modifications, or music. In Vinyasa classes, some teachers make props available, use background music, and encourage their students to modify postures, as needed.

What is yoga and why do we need it? There are tons of yoga instructor training programs, and tons of spiritual coaching sessions. There are tips on leading holistic and compassionate, natural lifestyles, and there are many weekly yoga classes that people go to with dedication. Some people change and some people get nothing from this stuff. Why? The answer is often that they aren’t in tuned with the real principles of yoga. They aren’t really living it, or feeling it. They are simply coming to class as if they are in an aerobics workout session and powering through the exercises. If you experience a good yoga teacher training program, you’ll see that the simple stuff, the easy planks, the downward facing dogs, the mountain poses—these are the toughest and most subtle practices that can change you and help you to really see what it is that yoga does to benefit you. When you go to a yoga class and you still power through, breathe shallowly, and set unrealistic, vain goals for yourself, always pushing farther and farther into a pose, then you haven’t changed anything. You have tried to form yoga to your current paradigm rather than allow yoga to seep into you and change your perspective, your approach.

So what is yoga, and what do instructor training in order to succeed or see this. You can do it on your own. But it is made much easier and more supported in a formal training program.

Remember, yoga is unfolding before you if you are paying attention and make it happen.
It will simple unravel for you and you only need to commit yourself to union.

Vinyasa can be very different and often it is centered around the actual preferences a specific teacher enjoys. Some include more energy yoga movements, a few like a mild flow associated with asanas while some instructors involve chanting. The succession of asanas tend to be independent of the instructor or the presents that you choose to integrate to your personal exercise. Unlike additional yoga practices which have a more stringent sequence, Bikram’s for instance, a vinyasa movement yoga practice could be almost anything you would like it to be. The important thing focuses take presctiption flowing in to the poses and also the flow from the breath. It is extremely appealing to individuals for those factors. However, Bikram’s yoga is really a style of vinyasa, nevertheless its practice is much more strict.

One more reason for its attractiveness is the concentrate of deep breathing during the presents. Because you are utilizing your inhale as a focus, this is also a terrific way to calm your brain and line up it using the body. Deep breathing can be difficult to attain, which is why numerous teachers recommend you begin your own practice through focusing on the actual breath. It includes the liquid motions associated with vinyasa yoga poses and also the practice associated with meditation using the breath.Vinyasa yoga provides benefits to the body as well as mind.

Yoga is probably one of the most commonly practiced exercises all around the globe. Numerous poses of yoga help increase flexibility and range of motion, and relieve the pains and the aches of the body. Not only do they help lower your resting heart rate, but they also lower blood pressure and improve lung function. Moreover, they improve your cardiovascular efficiency, stamina and endurance. Another benefit of yoga poses is that they help reduce the effects of stress on your body and keep your mind fit and healthy.

There are around 90 yoga poses. If you are a beginner, then it is important that you choose poses (asanas) you feel easy to attempt and then switch to difficult ones gradually. Peacock pose, also known as Mayurasana, is an advanced pose that should be performed in the supervision of a qualified yoga trainer. This pose confers strong, detoxifying effects on the health of digestive system, thus promoting a healthy gastrointestinal tract and protecting against the risk of colon cancer. It helps relieve the symptoms of edema and stomach ulcer, and alleviates diseases like enlargement of the glands and eczema. A recent research has shown that Peacock pose helps eliminate toxins from liver and spleen.

Peacock pose also confers many benefits on the health of women as it helps relieve painful menstruation and menstrual disorders. It helps increase blood circulation throughout the abdominal region and stabilizes glucose levels in the blood. When performed on a regular basis, this pose decreases acidity in the blood and strengthens shoulders, elbows and wrists.

You should begin this pose by kneeling on the yoga mat and bringing your forearms together. Be sure to place your hands in the direction of your feet with little finger side of the hands towards each other. Next step is to squeeze your elbows in towards each other, place your upper abdomen on arms, and straighten your legs behind you. Make sure that you hold them above the ground for 10-15 breaths at a time.

If you have medical issues such as arthritis or osteoporosis, then avoid performing Peacock yoga pose as it puts tremendous pressure on your elbows and wrists. People who have other medical conditions such as heart disease, high cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, nose infections, hernia, or ulcer should avoid practicing this pose as well.

Peacock pose is a deeply detoxifying asanas in yoga that helps release toxins from your internal system and relieves many digestive ailments. It helps tone your body and makes you feel and look healthier. Incorporate this incredible yoga pose into your workout routine on a regular basis to improve strength, flexibility and balance.

Personal programming of our brain and thought is possible and includes the technique of Mantra. As well as the fine well known classical forms of yogic mantra we can find real value in devising our own. These can be comprised of sacred words and prayers from religious and philosophical teachings that we repeat for confirmation or identification with spiritual principles and qualities. The simplest of course are the affirmations we use to help ourselves strengthen the virtues to which we aspire in our Sadhana.

The ancient teachings remind us of the several forms of mantric expression – these being strong, vocalized word or words often chanted in group meditation; the gentle whispered mantra applied in our private meditations; and the one considered to have most potent direct effect upon the individual being the unbroken silent cyclic mental repetition that encourages us to link with the greater Universal Consciousness through our breath as in the sacred “Om” or “Aum”.

Many singers unconsciously or consciously use the science of sound to help voice skills or to stimulate moods and feelings that when magnified in a group emit considerable power and influence. They undertake specific exercising of the vocal chords and apply unique dedication to their art beyond the average understanding. Most of us who could be described as ‘shower time singers’ are not as self disciplined. So for the majority of us the simple guidelines we learn in improving breath control to help formulate and extend the power of our voice and our chanting through pranayama are satisfactory.

The principle of 3 word mantra is simple but helps us isolate and focus upon our individual purpose or values that gives us a wide range of more mundane application e.g. Strength, truth, harmony. The more profound impersonal spiritual chanting of the sacred “AUM” recognizes the triune principles of divinity when intoning.

The 5 fold focus upon the Natural Elements of fire, earth, air, water and ether requires concentration and some imagination to harness one’s mind to an aspiration to understand all the natural spheres of life both outside and within our own nature from the solid physical to the subtlest and invisible realms of the soul.

Seven is a popular choice for artists and those who are attracted to the use of natural light and the symbolism of Light itself. Perceived by us split through the natural spectrum of the beautiful rainbow colours the study of colour itself allows a 7- fold mantra technique that giving a single word to each colour that represents one quality of light itself – red, orange, gold, green, blue, indigo and purple.

Twelve fold mantra is often the choice of astrology students who wish to cultivate each of the human virtues exemplified in the zodiacal signs. Christians find it easy to attune to the mystical symbolism of the 12 disciples or the saints’ calendar as others associate particular powers to the 12 rays used to reflect the radiance of Divine Light. Yogis combine appropriate chants with the traditional physical exercise of Surya Namaskar. Others choose to exercise blending in the Lord’s Prayer as their Mantra.

Find the words that comfortably suit your understanding and your aspiration.

All affirmations and mantra when combined with our powers of visualization and concentration become potentially powerful tools in helping ourselves and indirectly, contribute a positive influence upon those who share our environment.

In the last decade, studies have been conducted that look into the benefits of Yoga; and several have concluded that with regard to children, consistent Yoga practice is linked to improved academic performance, decreased misbehavior, greater physical fitness, and better overall health.

Use in Schools

Some schools, public and private, across the United States, have incorporated kids’ Yoga into their curriculum, and still others receive subsidies for offering Yoga classes as part of their physical education programs. The results are clear; Yoga definitely helps young people focus, feel better about themselves, and behave more appropriately in an academic setting.

Enhancing Intelligence

It must also be noted that Yoga can help enhance children’s intelligence. Due to the fact that inversion poses improve blood flow to the brain and change the way a practitioner sees the world while practicing, they stretch and stimulate the mind. Yoga poses also feature relaxation techniques that can halt the onset of anxiety, which is a problem experienced by more and more young people and which can block certain brain cells from functioning. As a result of decreased stress levels and increase circulation, children can be more receptive to learning situations. Young minds are so flexible and resilient, increased learning receptivity will naturally broaden the ability to think outside the box.

Storytelling and Kids’ Yoga

To enhance intelligence with Yoga, storytelling is a useful tool that provides a young mind with external stimuli to focus on, while the physical Yoga poses help the child work out excess energy, stress, or other negative emotions. Stories can be told from books, from story boards, or even from memory, as the instructor uses the stories to pace a Yoga asana series and to emphasize certain poses.

In schools, smart teachers can use kids Yoga story time to reinforce their lessons, especially given the enhanced receptivity children have toward learning when they are relaxed. Parents, too, in a family Yoga session, can utilize stories that impart wisdom or moral lessons, to encourage children to grow into kind and wise adults.

Keeping kids Yoga stories creative and fun can also enhance intelligence. One way to do this is to give the class a role in creating the story, by contributing one line at a time, or by giving children responsibility to come up with unique poses to fit the Yoga story’s contents. Allowing young people to author their own Yoga practice can be rewarding for them physically, as well as mentally.

Yoga can impact kids in a number of positive ways. Yoga teaches kids how to control their bodies, how to channel energy and how to handle emotions, in positive ways. Children who practice Yoga are strong and flexible, but they also receive some cognitive benefits. Yoga improves kids’ concentration, focus, and listening skills. A kids Yoga class provides many opportunities for children to listen.

New Poses

Each time an instructor introduces a new Yoga posture, the students must listen carefully to the cues. While they are hearing the verbal cues, they must move their bodies to imitate the pose. This requires focus and good listening. Students also have the opportunity to listen attentively, when they practice familiar Yoga poses to make sure they are getting the benefits of each posture.

Stories

Kids’ Yoga instructors employ many strategies to engage children, while making Yoga fun and interesting. One of the most common strategies used by Yoga instructors is incorporating stories into class. Stories can help teach poses, techniques, and philosophies, while holding kids’ interest. Children are easily engaged in lively stories, allowing them to practice listening without even realizing it. When stories become familiar to kids, many Yoga teachers give them the opportunity to act them out with their bodies or retell a story in their own words, which also helps develop and improve listening.

Self-Reflection

One of the most valuable types of listening that children are exposed to through Hatha Yoga is listening to themselves. This is not a skill to be taken lightly, as so many kids sail through life without really thinking for themselves or listening to their inner voices. Too many kids “go with the flow,” which can cause them to make poor decisions and get into trouble at school or home.

Yoga and meditation teach kids to go within themselves for a time to listen to their bodies and minds. Through meditation, they can recognize negative thoughts and energy within the body and release them. They learn to pay close attention to how each pose makes them feel, then adjust their bodies accordingly.

Music and Games

Kids Yoga classes incorporate all types of music, from energizing to calming. Listening to the music and feeling the beats and pulses are another way for kids to sharpen listening skills. Games are a natural part of a kids’ Yoga class. Many games center around active listening. Students must listen to a partner and follow their lead, listen to music and freeze when it stops, or listen to the sounds of their environment without the sense of sight.
